Wine Appreciation

What do we do?

This group provides an introduction to wine tasting; an opportunity to taste different wines from across the world; to learn how wines are made and how factors like grape variety, country of origin, viticulture and wine making techniques influence the wines. One outcome should be better informed decisions when buying wine. Meetings, which last about two hours and involve tasting about 7 wines, are held about once a month.

What level of knowledge is required?

This course is suitable for beginners.

What materials are needed?

Wines and teaching materials are supplied and are covered by the fee for the class. Each person needs to bring two small plain wineglasses.

How many in the group, and are there any vacancies?

The class currently comprises 12 students. Numbers are constrained as meetings are held in a private home in Shaftesbury. There is also a practical limit to the number of tasting samples from a bottle of wine. The small numbers help maintain an informal atmosphere. There is a small waiting list of prospective members.

Where do the meetings take place?

We meet in members houses.
